DEMIDENKO DIARY (The). Who is she really?Prior, Natalie Jane. Mandarin, paperback (stiff card), 1996, 163 pages. A memoir about an Australian literary scandal. Jane Prior was a friend of Helen Demidenko, aka Helen Darville. Demidenko wrote a book called 'The Hand That Signed the Paper' which was published in 1994 and in the following year won the Miles Franklin Award, a major literary prize. The book purported to tell the story of Ukrainians suffering persecution but it was all a lie. Demidenko was not even Ukrainian.
