The author does not 'push' any view and, indeed, provides one of the most thoughtful studies I have seen on this vexed topic. The narrative is enhanced by some very clear, frank and somewhat confronting photographs of some of the people mentioned in the text. EDMUND GOSSE - FATHER AND SON. A Study in Two Temperaments. Hepburn, James. London, Oxford University Press, octavo hardcover, 1974, 192 pages, illustrated. Edmund Gosse's father was a minister of the Plymouth Brethren religion who happened also to be an eminent scientist, which led to tension as he tried to reconcile his faith with scientific knowledge. This is an ex-library copy with the usual library stamps, pocket and tape marks inside front and back, but is otherwise fairly good. The green cloth and spine lettering are excellent. The revealing story of someone who managed to escape from one of the innumerable polygamist cults connected in one way or another with Mormonism.  Carolyn was born into the cult and at age 8 became the fourth wife of a 50-year-old man, after which she had eight children.
